Tumor Upstaging in Invasive Melanoma Linked to Worse Survival Outcomes

Source: Dermatology Advisor, January 2025

Shortfalls in clinical management may explain why tumor upstaging in invasive melanoma is associated with worse survival outcomes, according to study findings published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Investigators sought to identify risk factors and determine tumor upstaging frequency in invasive melanoma and to evaluate the impact on outcomes and clinical management.

The investigators used data from the statewide Surveillance Endpoints and End Results -affiliated cancer registry from October 2014 through December 2018 to conduct a retrospective study to clarify factors associated with overall and melanoma-specific mortality and upstaging. An increase in tumor stage from biopsy to definitive surgery was used to define upstaging.
