The prognostic impact of the extent of ulceration in clinical stage I-II melanoma patients: A multicenter study of the Italian Melanoma Intergroup (IMI)

Source: MDLinx, April 2020

This study was undertaken to determine if the extent of ulceration (EU) predicts relapse free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in primary cutaneous melanoma (PCM). Four hundred seventy-seven individuals with ulcerated PCM were retrieved from databases of Italian Melanoma Intergroup. Considering both RFS and OS, a important relationship arose between Breslow thickness and EU. Findings suggested that EU has an independent prognostic effect in PCM and should be reported in the pathology reports as a necessary feature. In patients with 2.01?4 mm and > 4 mm BT, no impact of EU was found.
