Risk Factors for Skin Tumors, Melanoma Vary for Patients With Parkinson Disease

Investigators in Israel compared rates of risk factors for CMM, non?melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), and actinic keratosis (AK) among individuals with and without PD.
The investigators conducted a cross-sectional observational study to assess risk factors for skin tumors and their interactions with PD status, enrolling 141 individuals with PD (mean age, 71.7 years; women, 38.3%; Ashkenazi Jewish origin, 71.6%) and 155 individuals without PD (control group; mean age, 72.6 years; women, 48.4%; Ashkenazi Jewish origin, 76.1%). The PD group included only individuals who met the United Kingdom PD Society Brain Bank’s neurologic criteria for idiopathic PD. The mean duration of PD was 10.6 years. Individuals in the PD group vs the non-PD group more commonly had a family history of PD (17.0% vs 7.1%) and the proportions of individuals with family history of CMM or NMSC were similar between the groups (13.5% vs 14.2%), respectively.
Among the PD group, 53.9% experienced at least 1 skin tumor of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), CMM, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and/or AK vs 59.3% in the control group.
