Prognostic value of macrophage polarization markers in epithelial neoplasms and melanoma. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Source: MDLinx, April 2020

A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the correlation of proposed macrophage markers with prognosis across epithelial tumors and melanoma. Researchers applied the Medline search engine and recovered 195 articles for full review. This research enrolled only articles which measured markers using immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence and had overall survival (OS) as the primary endpoint. For analysis, 113 articles were finally accepted. An association was found between proposed M2 markers and worse survival across epithelial tumors and melanoma. This association was affected by the anatomical origin of tumors. The compartment where the macrophages were scored and counting strategy affected the correlation with OS of CD68 and CD163, respectively.
