Prognostic significance of acral lentiginous histologic type in T1 melanoma
Source: MDLinx, August 2020
Researchers investigated if the poor result of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is because of its inherent disease features or advanced stage at initial diagnosis.
For this purpose, they performed a retrospective study of 828 thin (T1; Breslow thickness ≤ 1.0 ≤ mm) melanomas [129 (15.6%) ALMs and 699 (84.4%) non-ALMs].
A median follow-up of 84.5 months was performed. With the exception of overall survival (OS) at T1b stage, significantly lower 5- and 10-year disease-specific survival (DSS), OS, and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates at every pathologic stage were identified in ALM patients vs non-ALM.
