Improved risk prediction calculator for sentinel node positivity in patients with melanoma: The Melanoma Institute Australia nomogram

Source: MDLinx, June 2020

Although National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and ASCO/Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) guidelines and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) online nomogram are valuable for selecting patients with primary cutaneous melanoma for sentinel node (SN) biopsy, researchers aimed at generating an improved online risk calculator using alternative clinicopathologic parameters that may allow more accurate prediction of SN positivity. Analysis was performed on data from 3,477 patients with melanoma who underwent SN biopsy at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA). Replacement of body site and Clark level from the MSKCC model with mitotic rate, melanoma subtype, and lymphovascular invasion led to the development of the new nomogram.
