Half of Cancer Deaths Are Attributable to Modifiable Risk Factors, Report Suggests

Roughly half of all cancer deaths worldwide are attributable to modifiable risk factors, according to The Cancer Atlas, a report released by the American Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.1

The report states that tobacco products are known to cause at least 17 types of cancer, and more than 20% of all cancer-related deaths are due to tobacco use. In 2021, tobacco smoking was responsible for roughly 2 million cancer deaths.

The report also states that roughly 70% to 90% of cutaneous melanomas and “virtually all” keratinocyte cancers are attributable to ultraviolet radiation exposure. More than 332,000 new cases of melanoma and more than 59,000 melanoma deaths occur each year.
