Australia has regained the unenviable title of having the highest rates of invasive melanoma in the world, pushing New Zealand off top spot.

New research has found that about 50 in every 100,000 Australians were diagnosed with the potentially deadly skin cancer in 2014-15, compared with 47 in every 100,000 New Zealanders.

Queensland has the highest rate of melanoma per head of population in Australia, followed by WA, which had 1277 new cases in 2014.
