Commercial solariums will be banned in the ACT at the end of 2014 because of the increased risk of melanoma they cause.

It’s lights out for tanning beds in Canberra with the ACT government banning commercial solariums.

The full ban will be in effect by the end of 2014 in a move that follows NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

Queensland has imposed restrictions on new tanning beds.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says the 18-month notice of the ban would give solarium operators time to diversify their businesses.

There have been restrictions on who can use tanning beds in the ACT since 2010.
