Reflectance Confocal Microscopy Is Useful in Presurgical Melanoma Margin Mapping
Source: Dermatology Advisor, December 2024
Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) has a high concordance rate with histopathology for presurgical margin mapping in patients with lentigo maligna (LM) and lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM), according to the results of a study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology.
Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized or observational studies that used RCM for lesion margin mapping, confirmed with the gold standard histopathology, in adults with LM/LMM undergoing surgical treatment.
A literature search was performed in July 2023 in the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Clinicaltrials.gov databases for relevant studies. The primary outcome was negative predictive value (NPV), which was the number of true negatives confirmed by histopathology of all negative lesions analyzed with RCM.
