Cutaneous Melanoma Incidence Declining Among Pediatric, AYA Patients
Source: Cancer Therapy Advisor, November 2024
The incidence of cutaneous melanoma is generally declining among pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients in the United States, according to research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
To investigate trends in the incidence of cutaneous melanoma among pediatric and AYA patients, researchers evaluated data from the National Childhood Cancer Registry during 1997-2020.
Among all pediatric patients (ages 0-14), the overall incidence of cutaneous melanoma was 1.74 per 1 million person-years. Most melanoma cases were histologically unclassified and labeled as melanoma not otherwise specified (NOS)/regressing (60.18%). Superficial spreading melanoma was the second most common subtype observed (16.25%). The most common primary tumor location was the skin of the lower limb and hip (25.9%).
