Survival Outcomes in Melanoma May Be Improved by Statin Use (
Source: Dermatology Advisor, October 2024
Statin use may have beneficial effects on overall survival (OS) and
disease-free survival (DFS) among patients with melanoma, according
to results of a systematic review and meta-analysis published in
Melanoma Research.
Recent preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that statins may
inhibit tumor proliferation and metastasis, with potential for significant
survival benefit associated with statin use seen among several types of
cancer. To assess whether statins may have clinical utility in melanoma,
investigators from McMaster University in Canada searched 3
publication databases through April 2023 for studies comparing
survival and/or recurrence between patients with melanoma
undergoing oncologic treatment who did and did not receive statin
therapy.
A total of 7 retrospective cohort studies and 1 prospective cohort study
published between 2007 and 2022 were included in this analysis. All studies recruited patients with primary disease. In studies that reported disease characteristics, most patients had stage I or II disease ?91.9%) and the most common disease locations were the trunk (35.7%)
and lower extremities (25.2%).
