Examining the Link Between Melanoma Thickness and Patient Age at Diagnosis

Researchers observed significant stepwise increases in median Breslow lesion thickness with increasing age at diagnosis of invasive melanoma in White patients in the United States and general population in Australia, according to a letter to the editor published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

To inform strategies for early detection, researchers from Brisbane, in Queensland, Australia evaluated trends in age at diagnosis of invasive melanoma based on lesion thickness and histologic subtype in the US patients (100% White) and general population in Queensland.

Data for all melanoma diagnoses in both patient groups from 1999 to 2018 were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program of the National Cancer Institute and from the Queensland Cancer Registry.
