According to the Cancer Council of Australia, skin cancer is the most common type in the country, with around 434,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Around 99% of those are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
The risk is even greater for tradies who are often outdoors working in exposed areas. In fact, a recent study by the Cancer Council NSW found that tradies are more than twice as likely to develop skin cancer as the general population.
Too tough for sunscreen
Another survey of 1,000 tradies showed some alarming results. Despite knowing the dangers of melanoma, a significant percentage of the participants do not believe that sunscreen is necessary and that melanoma is not a serious threat. Those who are more precautious, most of them apply sunscreen only once a day, according to the Cancer Council.
