Researchers undertook this retrospective case-control study to assess whether and how indoor tanning is related to the development of multiple primary melanoma.

From the Biological Sample and Nevus Bank of the Melanoma Center of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, they retrieved cases with multiple primary melanoma and gender-matched controls with single primary melanoma, at a 1:2 ratio.

Enrollment of 330 patients (39.1% men) with a median age of 51 years was done.

Researchers undertook this retrospective case-control study to examine the link between indoor tanning and the development of multiple primary melanoma.

To assess the link between multiple primary melanoma and risk factors, experts employed logistic regression models.

This study involved 330 patients (39.1% men) with a median age of 51 years.

Given that more than two people die of skin cancer in the United States every hour, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer to cancel tanning beds, right? New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association makes a compelling argument for instituting a total ban on the practice. A ban on indoor tanning beds for the next generation could avert 448,000 melanomas and 9.7 million keratinocyte carcinomas, according to a meta-analysis. That’s a lot of cancer.

“It is not the number of people, it is the number of skin cancers—people can get multiple skin cancers,” says author of the research Louisa Gordon, PhD, associate professor at Queensland University of Technology. “The numbers are large because it’s modeled for large populations over a long time—for their remainder of their lives or 60-70 years.”

Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, says many of his patients, especially those in older generations, are suffering the consequences of having used tanning beds. “Unfortunately, those who are most at risk are people who may not be thinking about what the future will bring,” he says. “Knowing how harmful tanning beds are, I personally support the idea of banning the use of them.”

Thirty years after she started using tanning beds as a teenager, Sharman Dudley still has a regular reminder of the consequences.

She needs a thorough skin cancer check every three months after four of the many atypical moles that cover her body turned out to be melanoma.

There’s no doubt in her mind indoor tanning is to blame.

“Of course I regret it… tanning beds are terrible,” Dudley, 45, who lives in Washington, D.C., told TODAY. But she worries the current generation isn’t getting the message — despite many warnings that exposure to ultraviolet rays is particularly dangerous for young people.

In the present study, the researchers sought to assess the impact of tanning bed use on the behavior of subsequent melanomas. Utilizing an institutional registry, cases of invasive cutaneous melanoma who finished a baseline questionnaire within 1?year of the biopsy were ascertained. Among 141 cases, compared with men, a higher percentage of women reported tanning bed usage. Tanning bed usage was not a significant independent predictor of 5-year overall survival after controlling for the effects of gender and nodal status. For patients with no tanning bed melanoma relative to those with a history of tanning bed use, if they exclude the patient with MUP on the basis that more of these are mucosal for origin, lower TNM stage at presentation is observed. Furthermore, patients with tanning beds are younger and more likely to be female but with an equal mortality rate.

New research shows that skin-cancer rates have surged among young women, likely because they use tanning beds, but health experts warn that exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays puts us all at risk, so it’s important to always take precautions when out in the sun.

The research, presented at the summer meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, found that between 1970 and 2009, rates of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increased 800 percent among women 18 to 39, an AAD news release said.

During a similar time frame, the researchers also found that basal-cell and squamous-cell carcinoma rates also increased, 145 percent and 263 percent, respectively.

LINCOLN — A group of Nebraska tanning salons has gotten burned in its attempt to fight an anti-tanning campaign.

The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a lawsuit claiming that the campaign, The Bed is Dead, had defamed the salons and disparaged their business with “false or misleading” statements.

While calling the decision disappointing, a tanning industry spokesman said the suit succeeded in discouraging local radio stations from playing the campaign’s public service announcements and in prompting the campaign to tone down its statements.

The rates of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, are increasing exponentially, with research presented at the American Academy of Dermatology Summer Meeting reporting an 800% increase between 1970 and 2009 among women aged 18 to 39 years.

Basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma rates have also increased by 145% and 263%, respectively, according to a press release from the AAD.

“This data reveals the disproportionate rise in the number of skin cancers in women and the need for further education regarding UV exposure,” M. Laurin Council, MD, FAAD, FACMS, an associate professor of dermatology at Washington University in St. Louis, said in the press release.
